Are You There God? It’s me, Megan.

Does anyone remember Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret by Judy Blume? Margaret is a pre-teen who doesn’t know much about God—so she writes letters to Him in a diary. I honestly don’t remember much about the novel, but the title of it sums up how I feel sometimes.

Sometimes I catch myself saying, “God…uh, Gooood? Are You there? Hello? Are You listening? Did You fall asleep?!”

Don’t roll your eyes at me. You know you’ve done it too. I’ve been a Christian since I was 8-years-old and I still find myself thinking that maybe God has gotten tired of me.

Why are we so quick to think God has abandoned us when we don’t hear Him right away? I know deep in my heart that He hears my cries and thoughts, but sometimes I feel like He doesn’t care.

Even King David felt that way sometimes. In Psalm 22, he cries out to God:

1My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Why are you so far from saving me, from the words of my groaning? 2 Oh my God, I cry by day, but you do not answer, and by night, but I find no rest.”

It’s a bit reassuring to know that the guy we know as “a man after God’s own heart” (Acts 13:22) even felt like God had abandoned him at times.

Charles Spurgeon once wrote, “Christian, it is contrary to every promise of God’s precious Word that He would ever forget you or let you perish!”

And it’s true. For God to turn His back on me or forget me would go against His very nature.

David knew that too, because he continued in the next verses by saying, “3 Yet you are holy, enthroned on the praises of Israel. 4 In you our fathers trusted; they trusted, and you delivered them. 5 To you they cried and were rescued; in you they trusted and were not put to shame.”

Even when I don’t hear God’s voice or feel like He’s near, I can know that He loves me, He cares, and He hasn’t forsaken me. His promises are true—He will never leave us nor forsake us (see Deut. 31:6).

{And those who know your name put their trust in you, for you, O Lord, have not forsaken those who seek you. Psalm 9:10 ESV}

    Next ponderance: Do you know God’s name?
