30 Days of Thankfulness: Day 24

Today I am thankful for my experience working at Vera Bradley. But during this holiday season, I’m especially thankful to no longer be working at Vera Bradley!

Working in retail was an incredible opportunity for growth in my life. I worked really long hours, forced a smile on my face when with difficult customers, and learned how to make the best out of crabby situations. Retail isn’t glamorous, y’all. It’s not glamorous at all.

I’m thankful that God put me in a job I didn’t love. I’m thankful that I had the opportunity to take a situation and learn from it, grow from it, and eventually move from it. I’m thankful for the girls I worked with, the sweet customers I knew by name, and all the free purses I got (I’m not saying it was all horrible).

This holiday season, be polite to the sales associates you meet while shopping. Don’t bite their head off for saying “Merry Christmas” instead of “Happy Holidays.” Don’t complain to them about how your feet hurt from shopping all day, because they have most likely been working a 9-hour shift in “stylish shoes.” (Guess what—”stylish” shoes and “comfortable” shoes usually aren’t the same thing.) And please, please, please don’t pick stuff up and throw it down in some random place when you decide you don’t want it. Refrain from complaining about how long lines are.

And most of all, please don’t go shopping on Thanksgiving Day. I promise, I promise, I promise—you can wait until Black Friday. No sale, no discount, no deal is so important that you take a sales clerk away from their family on Thanksgiving day. I’m sure they’re thankful they have a job, but they would most likely be more thankful to spend an evening with their parents, siblings, spouse, or children.

Happy Thanksgiving week!
