As Long As You Are Glorified

Sometimes life is hard. I really wish I could say that I wake up every morning, praising God for a new day. But since we’re being honest, I should probably let you in on a secret: Most mornings I wake up grumbling that it’s yet another day. (Let’s not even talk about my attitude on Mondays.)

Just this morning, I was listening to the news as I was getting ready for work: A serial arsonist is on the loose, an elementary school teacher was arrested on child pornography charges, a baby was kidnapped, and a man was stabbed at an apartment complex. And that was just Monday night.

When I hear sad news like that, it’s hard for me to praise God. My initial reaction is to say, “God, why did you allow that to happen? Where is the good in that?” I lose sight of the fact that God is still in control—and still loves us—even when bad things happen. Sin and destruction are a part of this world, but God is bigger. We’re not alone.

Sometimes we have to choose to praise God. Sure, it’s really easy to praise Him when things are going well—when we get the job promotion, or get engaged, or have a baby. But when bad things happen, do we run away from God or toward Him? When something doesn’t go our way, do we grumble and complain, or do we ask God for His will to be done?

The lyrics below are from one of my favorite songs—”As Long As You Are Glorified”—written by Mark Altrogge. The chorus goes “Oh let your will be done in me, in your love I will abide / Oh I long for nothing else as long as you are glorified.” I want that to be the prayer of my heart. I long for nothing else—just for you to be glorified, God.

“As Long As You Are Glorified”

Verse 1

Shall I take from Your hand Your blessings
Yet not welcome any pain?
Shall I thank You for days of sunshine
Yet grumble in days of rain?
Shall I love You in times of plenty
Then leave You in days of drought?
Shall I trust when I reap a harvest
But when winter winds blow, then doubt?

Oh let Your will be done in me
In Your love I will abide
Oh I long for nothing else as long
As You are glorified

Verse 2

Are you good only when I prosper
and true only when I’m filled?
Are you King only when I’m carefree
and God only when I’m well?
You are good when I’m poor and needy
You are true when I’m parched and dry
You still reign in the deepest valley
You’re still God in the darkest night

So quiet my restless heart
Quiet my restless heart
Quiet my restless heart in you
